Senate Training Limited are based in Alsager, Cheshire, and provide a broad range of public and private clients in the UK, the US and Europe with completely bespoke training packages and security consultancy services. The company was set up by Janet Keeling and her husband in 2000 and underwent a huge growth period, achieving a turnover of £1.3 million in just five years. They currently employ 25 members of staff.

Senate Training has been utilising total employment solutions (TES) for around two years, after being referred to associate Lynne Ingram by another of the solicitors. They now run everything HR-related through the TES team.

It’s the team nature that is one of the aspects Janet finds most reassuring. “You aren’t just dealing with one professional,” she says. “If I employed an HR person in house, I’d have the expertise of just one person. Instead I can rely on the whole of the team, who know who can answer your questions if they don’t have the answers to hand themselves”

Janet feels that outsourcing HR is the best option for Senate Training at the moment, as the 25-strong payroll would not constitute enough work for an HR-qualified individual but Janet doesn’t have the time to commit to the issues that are thrown up herself.

“Our staff are our biggest asset,” says Janet. “The desire to comply with any HR legislation is there, but on the other hand I have to balance that with actually managing the company. The level of knowledge and experience at Knights is marvellous. They provide us with a safety net and we have access to knowledge and information on tap.

“I’m sure I could read up on HR legislation – if I had the time – and be able to comply, but it’s the application of that law that stands out about Knights. They’re very creative. Lynne Ingram used to be a firefighter so she’s got a practical approach to workplace issues. It’s
refreshing that they are nothing like solicitors. I don’t have to listen to people telling me all about themselves but can talk to people with a genuine sense of humour instead.

“Their breakfast seminars are perfect for me. It’s only an hour, and I can sit, have a bacon butty and meet the partners, instead of just speaking to them over the phone. There’s role play and drama and we have the chance to give some input. The whole team really will go
the extra mile to help.”
