The Miles Consultancy specialises in hi-tech systems, including mileage capture, for companies wishing to maximise the tax and national insurance savings of operating a cash allowance scheme for employees as an alternative to traditional company cars.
Paul first came across Knights’ TES package when the business was growing and HR became exposed as a liability area. Paul was reluctant to employ a full time qualified HR director and so decided to conduct research into outsourcing his HR concerns. The research process proved more difficult than Paul anticipated, with just a single company he came across offering a complete service – Knights.
The Miles Consultancy now combines the TES from Knights with their own web-based HR solution that allows employers to access and monitor employee records online. Paul has implemented the full complement of services offered by Knights, and relies on them on a monthly basis. He also attends the monthly seminars offered by Knights.
“The seminars are invaluable, but they come as a bit of a shock. It was quite frightening to find out that there were things that I should have been doing as an employer, but wasn’t, and was left vulnerable to tribunal action. The most innocent things can get taken out of proportion, and you need to have a body of documented evidence explaining your every move. If in doubt, you, as the employer, are guilty. The HR laws are growth inhibiting, as they put you off employing people. As an employer you become tempted to not speak to people, in case you say the wrong thing.”
According to Paul the total employment solutions package offers peace of mind, in that he knows he has the right policies in place and is protected. He believes that the solution also acts as a deterrent to employees seeking to take advantage of business owners without a fully reinforced defence.
“£10,000 and £20,000 sums of money are handed out on a daily basis, just to stop cases from going into the courts and the press,” says Paul. “Tribunals can be destructive to an employer, and unfortunately some people know this and want to cash in on it. If an employer has wronged an employee then the procedures are fair, but some people see claims as an easy way to make a lot of money.
“Employees are our biggest cost, but they are also our biggest investment and our biggest asset. We want to do right by our employees, and the total employment solutions makes sure we are doing so by having the right policies and procedures in place.”
